Why it's important to start the organization now
Recent statistics indicate that injuries and accidents are among the leading causes of death in the Kingdom;they are the second leading cause of death after chronic diseases in some categories. For example, road accidents have been responsible for significantly reducing life expectancy and injuries. In 2016, the Kingdom recorded a high mortality rate of 9,311 deaths (28.8 per 100,000 population), but it decreased to 6,651 deaths (18.5 per 100,000) by 2021, which shows a positive improvement but confirms the continued seriousness of the issue. Road injuries annually are estimated in the tens of thousands; the Ministry of Health documented more than 25,000 traffic injuries in 2020 despite the decrease in movement during the pandemic.
Domestic accidents are also a growing concern; local studies indicate that the home is the most common place for child injuries. In one field study in one region of the Kingdom, 58.2% of domestic accidents for children were due to falls and collisions with solid objects, followed by burns (30.7%), suffocation, and others. These figures highlight the seriousness of the lack of safety measures in homes. As for the elderly, they are often vulnerable to falls at home; it is estimated that up to half of the elderly (about 49.9%) may experience a fall annually in Saudi Arabia, causing serious injuries such as bone fractures and head injuries.
In the work environment, despite notable progress, accidents and injuries still occur. According to the Ministry of Human Resources, work injuries have decreased by 30 percent in recent years – from a rate of 416 injuries per 100,000 workers to 288 currently as a result of strengthened safety regulations. However, thousands of occupational injuries are still recorded every year, especially in the industrial and construction sectors. Globally, more than 2.3 million people lose their lives annually due to work-related accidents, injuries, and occupational diseases, highlighting the importance of prevention in our work environment as well.
In addition, the Kingdom is currently witnessing a major urban and industrial expansion as part of Vision 2030, accompanied by an increase in projects, public activities, and events. This expansion increases the need to educate the community about safety to ensure that the developmental renaissance is accompanied by a preventive awareness that protects lives and safeguards gains.
